What is DTF printing?
Direct-to-film printing, or DTF, prints artwork onto film, adds hot-melt adhesive powder, and presses the finished transfer onto a garment. It is different from DTG, which prints ink directly onto the fabric.
DTF can work well for colorful artwork and products that a supplier has tested with its film, adhesive, and press settings. It may be a poor fit for heat-sensitive fabrics or placements that cannot sit flat in a heat press.
DTF is one type of heat transfer. Heat-transfer vinyl and screen-printed transfers use different materials and preparation, so ask what a supplier means when a listing says only “heat transfer.”
Results depend on the ink, film, adhesive, press settings, fabric, and garment finish. Check the printable area, seams, care instructions, and how a larger design affects feel before you order a sample.

Is DTF the same as heat transfer?
DTF is one apparel heat-transfer subtype. Heat transfer is the broader family and also includes heat-transfer vinyl and screen-printed transfers. Resolve the subtype before assigning material, artwork, feel, care, or production claims.
Is UV DTF a heat transfer?
Not in this model. Mimaki's documented UV DTF workflow uses UV-curable ink and an adhesive film system for object surfaces. Apparel DTF uses hot-melt adhesive and heat-press application. The shared acronym does not make the processes interchangeable.
Does DTF work on any fabric?
