How to choose between DTF and screen printing
- Choose DTF when the provider has qualified the transfer system for the garment and its preparation and pressing route fits the artwork and order.
- Choose screen printing when the producer accepts the garment and artwork and an aggregated run of identical units can reuse its screen setup.
- Do not use a generic quantity threshold, price crossover, feel claim, or wash count; compare the actual providers, systems, quotes, and tests.
Frequently asked questions
Is DTF a type of screen printing?
No. Apparel DTF prints a film-and-hot-melt-adhesive transfer and applies it with a heat press. Direct screen printing pushes ink through stencil-controlled mesh onto the substrate. Screen-printed transfers are a separate transfer subtype.
What order quantity makes screen printing better than DTF?
No universal threshold is supported. Compare identical quantity, screens, separations, setup, garment, ink, transfer preparation, labor, provider routing, and actual quotes.
Can DTF be used for one item?
Often, but not always. A supplier may prepare and press each transfer as orders arrive or produce transfers in batches. Ask how the supplier handles your order size.
