DTG vs DTF at a glance
| What to compare | DTG | DTF |
|---|---|---|
| Application workflow | When required by the named DTG system, the garment is prepared or pretreated before textile ink is applied directly; the print is fixed afterward under that system's instructions. | Artwork is printed to film, combined with hot-melt adhesive, prepared as a transfer, and heat-pressed onto the garment. |
| Material compatibility | Support depends on the qualified printer, ink, pretreatment, garment, garment color, and fixing combination. | Support depends on the qualified ink, film, adhesive powder, press conditions, garment, and finish combination. |
| Surface feel and coverage | Ink is deposited directly on the garment; pretreatment, a white underbase, coverage, and fixing can affect the decorated surface. | The decoration brings ink and adhesive to the garment surface; coverage and transfer construction can affect the decorated surface. |
| Artwork and color | Artwork is reproduced by the provider's direct digital workflow on the selected garment; white-ink, underbase, and file rules are system-specific. | Artwork is reproduced on film before transfer; the ink set, garment color, film, and provider file rules constrain the job. |
| Durability evidence | A defensible result names the printer, ink, pretreatment if used, garment, fixing process, test method, condition, and result. | A defensible result names the ink, film, adhesive, press process, garment, test method, condition, and result. |
| Fulfillment and quantity | Reviewed supplier evidence includes individualized fulfillment for Spreadshirt's named Digital Direct service, not for every DTG provider. | Transfer preparation and garment application can be separate stages, but the accepted sources do not establish DTF as single-unit or aggregated fulfillment. |
How to choose between DTG and DTF
- Choose DTG when the provider has qualified the garment for its direct-print system and the direct digital workflow suits the artwork and placement.
- Choose DTF when the provider has qualified the film, adhesive, press, and garment combination and a prepared transfer suits the production route.
- Do not decide from fabric shorthand or a wash-count claim; verify the exact decorated system and the named test behind any durability result.
Frequently asked questions
What is the main difference between DTG and DTF?
DTG applies textile ink directly to the garment. Apparel DTF prints the design on film, adds hot-melt adhesive, and heat-presses the transfer onto the garment.
Does DTG only work on cotton while DTF works on any fabric?
No. Epson documents polyester DTG with its named polyester pretreatment, while its DTF workflow also depends on a named film, adhesive, press process, and garment. Compatibility must be established for the exact system.
Does DTG or DTF last longer?
There is no supported method-wide winner. Compare results that name the complete decorated system, care conditions, test method, test condition, and measured result. AATCC TM61 defines accelerated laundering conditions but not a universal wash count.
