About this product

Greeting cards put an illustration, photograph or short message on paper. Think of the artwork and the written greeting together: each needs enough room to be read without crowding the other.

What to know

  • Paper surface for artwork and written greetings

  • Greeting-card format for a personal message

  • Digital printing for custom card designs

More product details

A greeting card has two jobs: carry the artwork and leave room for the message. An illustration-led cover can use a different layout from the greeting, rather than trying to fit everything into one composition.

For a folded design, treat the crease as part of the layout. Keep names and small lettering away from it, and extend background artwork into the template’s bleed area so trimming does not leave a white edge.

Common questions

How do I lay out artwork around a fold?

Keep text and important details clear of the crease. Use the fold line in the artwork template to separate the cover from the message area.

Does artwork need to extend past the trim line?

A background that reaches the edge needs bleed beyond the trim line. Keep lettering inside the safe area so small cutting differences do not clip it.

Should the greeting be part of the cover design?

It can be. Leave enough contrast and space for the words to remain readable at card size; the artwork should not compete with a short greeting.
