What is heat transfer printing?
Heat transfer means a design is prepared away from the product and then applied with heat and pressure. The family includes DTF, heat-transfer vinyl, screen-printed transfers, and other digital transfers.
The exact type matters. DTF uses printed film and adhesive powder, vinyl is cut and weeded, and screen-printed transfers are prepared with screen-printing inks. They have different artwork, fabric, feel, and quantity tradeoffs.
Before choosing, ask which transfer material, adhesive, press settings, and fabric are used. Heat-sensitive products, seams, pockets, hardware, coatings, and curved surfaces can limit where a transfer can be applied.
A listing that says only “heat transfer” does not tell you enough about finish or durability. Confirm the subtype, printable area, care instructions, price, and whether transfers are made one at a time or in batches.

- Resolve whether the process is apparel DTF, heat-transfer vinyl, a screen-printed transfer, another digital transfer, or something else.
- Confirm that a DTF label means hot-melt apparel DTF rather than UV DTF.
- Identify the carrier, ink or vinyl, adhesive, press, and manufacturer application instructions.
- Verify the exact fabric, coating, finish, treatment, product construction, and heat sensitivity.
- Check artwork rules for cutting, weeding, separations, white ink, fine detail, color, coverage, and carrier edges.

- Use the system owner's care instructions and request named adhesion, wash, abrasion, cracking, peeling, or storage evidence.
- Confirm whether transfers are prepared individually or in a batch, then compare setup, production, delivered cost, and reprint terms.

Is DTF the same as heat transfer?
DTF is one apparel heat-transfer subtype. The family also includes heat-transfer vinyl and screen-printed transfers. Identify the subtype before comparing materials, artwork, feel, care, or production.
Is UV DTF a heat-transfer method?
Not in this model. Mimaki's UV DTF system uses UV-curable ink and an adhesive film transfer for object surfaces. The documented workflow is different from hot-melt apparel DTF and does not establish heat-press application merely because the name contains DTF.
Why are DTF listings counted separately?
DTF is a specific type of heat transfer. Counting it separately prevents the same listing from being counted twice and keeps generic “heat transfer” listings from being mistaken for DTF.
